DESIGNING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

Large or small, balcony or courtyard, our gardens are a vast living landscape that together can help nature’s recovery from the environmental crisis we face.   The patchwork effect of many wildlife-friendly gardens is massive and, whilst much more still needs to be done, there are many brilliant examples of ordinary people creating beautiful, ecologically diverse gardens right across the country.

This year, the Society of Garden Designers is celebrating them by opening up one of its prestigious SGD Award categories to the public.   Usually the preserve of the garden design profession, the SGD Awards 2021 will include the “Design for the Environment” Award created to reward a garden – whether created by a professional garden designer or a simple garden enthusiast – that combines wildlife-loving habitats and sustainable planting.

We all have the power to make a difference, let’s hope that by demonstrating the great reward gardening can give to the environment we can persuade everyone to create their own mini nature reserve.
